If you’re thinking about taking up punch needling, you might not know where to start- I know I didn’t! I wasn’t sure what punch needle tool to use, or what embroidery hoop would work best for punch needling. Because of this, I ended up purchasing so many different punch needle supplies. I was able to test out what works best for the projects I wanted to make, and after a lot of trial and error, I found my favorite punch needle tools! If you’re not familiar with the art of punch needling, here’s a quick rundown. Punch needle embroidery is a unique and versatile craft that allows you to create beautiful textured designs and decor pieces. A punch needle tool is used to pierce through the fabric and create colorful loops on the other side. The art of punch needling is basically rug tufting but on a smaller scale. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced stitcher, having the right supplies is essential to level up your punch needle game. In this article, I’ll introduce you to the must-have supplies for your first punch needle project- everything from fabric options to tools and yarn!
PUNCH NEEDLE TOOL
If you’re new to punch needle embroidery, there are a few essential supplies you’ll need to get started. First and foremost, you’ll need a punch needle tool. This tool is the heart of your punch needle embroidery journey, as it allows you to create those beautiful loops. Look for a punch needle tool that is comfortable to hold and has adjustable needle lengths, so you can create different loop heights according to the project you are making. There are MANY different types of punch needle tools available, and I have tried a lot of them! My personal favorite is the Oxford Punch Needle, but it is a bit pricey, so I recommend investing in higher-quality tools further down your punch needle journey. This way, you can play around with the sizes and actual types of punch needles to find which feels best for you!
FABRIC
Next, you’ll need some fabric for your punch needle project. There are various fabric options available, but the most common fabric used for punch needle embroidery is monk’s cloth. Monk’s cloth is a popular choice for beginners due to its tight weave, and heaviness, which prevents the loops from slipping out. Monk’s cloth isn’t the only option- you might want a lighter fabric for smaller projects such as weaver’s cloth or linen. Experiment with different types of fabric However, if this is your first punch needle project, Monk’s cloth will do the trick!
EMBROIDERY HOOP
In addition to the punch needle tool and fabric, there are a few other tools that can make your punch needle embroidery experience a bit easier. A good embroidery hoop is essential in your punch needle journey. A non-slip embroidery hoop makes punching so much easier than if you were to use a regular wood embroidery hoop. It not only holds your fabric taut, but also helps in maintaining an even tension while punching. Look for a hoop that is larger than your design size, so you have enough space to work comfortably. YARN
Choosing the right yarn might seem daunting if you are just starting out with punch needling. It’s important to keep in mind the type of project you’ll be working on while you pick out your yarn. There are many types of yarns that work with punch needling, ranging from thin to chunky. I’ve tried so many different types of yarns, I’ve lost track. It took me a lot of trial and error to find what works best for me, and I’m here to pass on the knowledge!
Acrylic yarn is a popular choice for beginners due to its affordability and wide color range. I’ve linked below a great acrylic yarn bundle that’s perfect for punch needle beginners (and pretty inexpensive!) Cotton yarn is great as well, especially for more detailed designs as cotton yarn is usually on the thinner side. Wool yarn, on the other hand, gives a soft and luxurious feel to your designs and is great for big punch needle art pieces like wall hangings or pillowcases! Experiment with different yarn weights and materials to add depth and dimension to your punch needle creations.
PUNCH NEEDLE THREADERS
Punch needle threaders are small but mighty tools that make your punch needle embroidery journey much more enjoyable. Threaders are the last essential tool you’ll need to start your punch needle journey! Punch needle threaders help you thread your punch needle with ease. In my experience, threaders break super easily, so an extra tip I have would be to add another layer of tape at the bottom to make it more secure. Linked below is a bulk pack of threaders that I use.
